What's this all about?

What is BitPonies?

BitPonies is a game centered around breedable, collectible and eventually raceable horses! Each BitPony is unique and completely owned by you! They cannot be cloned, taken away or destroyed.

How Do BitPonies Differ from BitCoin?

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, a digitized form of money, while BitPonies is a cryptocollectible, an item you can keep that is rare and uniquely yours, like a baseball card.

Any BitPony you own belongs to you - no one else can own your BitPony unless you trade or grant it to them. Like any product or property you can own, the market price is determined by supply and demand.

Basic Requirements

Your computer, and Chrome or Firefox are recommended.

It may be technically possible to use another browser, but we can't guarantee optimal performance on other browsers.

What are the best browsers to play BitPonies on?

Since we use Metamask, the best platforms to use in order to play are Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.

Can I play BitPonies on my mobile device?

Unfortunately, no. While you can access and browse the BitPonies website, but you can't interact with your BitPonies on mobile devices.

Can I log in from multiple locations?

Yes, as long as your ether wallet is the same in each location.

Your digital wallet

What is a digital wallet?

In order to play BitPonies, you'll need a digital wallet. Your digital wallet will function like a bank account, meaning that you should do your best not to forget your password or seed words. We support Metamask. Like a bank account, a digital wallet is an important place for your currency to stay safe. Do not give out the password to your digital wallet under any circumstances. Once your wallet is set up, make sure to add money to it in order to start playing!

Why do I need seed words?

Instead of a password, many digital wallets use seed words, which let you restore your account in cases where you are locked out. Just remember to be careful with them: anyone that obtains your seed words can access your account and steal your assets. Save your seed words, and please don't share them with others.

I lost my wallet's digital password. Can you change it?

Unfortunately, no. Digital wallets are independent programs that we do not in any way control, making it impossible for us to access your wallet.

What is a digital wallet address?

A wallet address (e.g. 0xaba935f589805095a892ecefdb6eb83eff45d67) is essentially your wallet's name, functioning as a unique way to identify it. You can share the name freely with others. It is used to direct assets to your wallet.

What is Ether (ETH?)

Ether is a digital currency that powers the Ethereum network, which is what BitPonies is built on. Like any other currency, the value of Ether fluctuates with its value fluctuates in the market. You will need to convert your currency (e.g. USD, CAD, GBP) into ether to pay for things, like BitPonies, on the Ethereum network. Depending on the wallet and where you live, you may be able to buy currency directly. Unfortunately, you can't use USD/CAD to buy a BitPony directly: currencies need to be converted into ETH first. If your wallet doesn't let you buy currency, you will need to purchase ETH from an exchange, and then transfer the ETH from your exchange wallet to your digital wallet.

How long does it take to receive ether?

The very first time that you purchase ether, your exchange will ask to verify your identify. This process can take a little time - a day or so. If you need to link a bank account as opposed to a credit card, that may also take a few days, as your bank must verify the charges.

What is 'Gas' and why do I need to pay for it?
'Gas' is the term applied to the cost of powering a transaction or contract in Ethereum. Every transaction is distributed through multiple computers as opposed to a central server, as blockchain itself is decentralized. This ensures that each BitPony is unique in its make-up, and secure. The cost of gas also covers the time and money behind computational power, which is needed to generate every new pony.
'Gas' is composed of two parts: Gas Price and Gas Limit. Gas Price is what you offer to pay the miners (in a tiny measurement of ether called “gwei”) for each operation to execute the smart contract. Gas Limit is how many operations you allow them to perform before they run out of gas and drop the transaction.
1 gwei = 1/1,000,000,000th of an ether.

Buying & Selling

How do I get my first BitPony?

You can acquire your first BitPony through one of three methods:

Buy one from the Marketplace.
Breed two BitPonies together.
Receive one as a gift from another player. (You will still need a wallet to receive a BitPony as a gift, as your BitPonies are stored in your wallet!)

How much does it cost to play BitPonies?

Prices vary depending on the BitPony, but it does cost money to play the game. A small transaction fee (the 'gas') is also applied to each purchase. Here's how it works:
Buying: There is no set price for purchasing a BitPony. Users choose their own starting and ending price when they create an auction for their BitPony, and the price goes down until the BitPony is bought or the auction ends. When an auction finishes, that BitPony remains on sale at the final low auction price until its bought or the owner cancels the auction.
Breeding: Each time that you breed your BitPony, there will be a birthing fee. The birthing fee is collected by BitPonies which covers the cost of writing your new BitPony onto the blockchain. The fee may increase in cases of extreme congestion in the Ethereum network
Gas: Transactions are secured on the Ethereum blockchain, and it costs a small fee for its miners to process the transaction. This 'gas' fee applies to every transaction in BitPonies.

Can you recover my BitPonies if I can't access my wallet?

Unfortunately, no. Recovering a Bitpony from another wallet is impossible.

Here's why: Our smart contracts secure each BitPonies so that the developers can't edit, access, or reassign them. This protects your BitPonies from hackers and anyone else who would steal them. Unfortunately, it also means we can't simply 'recover' a BitPony.

Breeding & Siring

What are the requirements for breeding BitPonies?

The first thing you need in order to breed BitPonies is a BitPony of your own. You can buy one on the market or another user can give you one as a gift. From there, you can either breed it with a BitPony from the siring auction, or with another BitPony that you already own. All BitPonies are able to participate in breeding as either a Sire or Dam, based on which you choose to play each role. However, a BitPony can only produce one new BitPony at a time. So your Dam can't Sire while they're in the middle of a pregnancy — and vice versa.

How long does it take to breed a BitPony?

Each process varies depending on the BitPony. To monitor your BitPony’s cooldown process, click the clock icon.

Are there any restrictions when it comes to breeding BitPonies?

There is a short list of restrictions that will keep you from breeding your BitPony:

  • BitPonies cannot trade roles during the siring process.
  • BitPonies cannot breed when they are already pregnant.
  • BitPonies that are still in cooldown cannot breed.
  • It is not possible to breed a BitPony with its parents or siblings; cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and distant family members are available for breeding.
